October 2012 The night on the Wall
Staying the night on the wall:
We took an overnight trip to the Great Wall of China with the members of the branch. We were really excited about staying the night at the wall. Every year the members of the church have a get together at the wall. There is a cool hotel at the wall that we stayed it. It is very cold though, they have little rooms, kind of like a small dormitory. The rooms surround a courtyard, and there are a few different courtyards in the hotel surrounded by hotel rooms. We stayed a little farther from the rest of the group because we wanted more than one room with the baby. Ours was pretty cool. We had 2 rooms with a hallway in between. We put Mabel's crib in the bathroom and Kelly and Lincoln slept in that room, and I slept in the other room with Izzy and Sawyer.
The trip up to the wall was an adventure. We had a packed car with all of our stuff and we were driving up another family. Our friends the Pendeltons sat in the back with their little girl Maddie on their laps (anything goes in China, no seat belt laws, you get pretty relaxed pretty quickly). We had just barely started our trip when Izzy throws up in the car. We clean her up and decided to just keep going. I of course am not a very smart mom, so I give her some milk. The trip is about 2 hours away, but it took us about 3 hours. By the time we got up to the more mountainous area, Izzy was sick again and threw up all over herself and her carseat again. But we were almost there, we couldn't turn back. Izzy didn't have many clothes left and we knew it was going to be cold up there. Our poor friends in the back seat had to deal with that horrible smell the rest of the way up the mountain to the wall. We had to keep going because our friends oldest daughter was already up there, she had ridden up with some friends, so they needed to get there. We finally made it to the wall with a yucky, smelly car and with not many clothes left for Izzy. We were thinking of just turning around and going home, but Izzy seemed to be better so we stayed there and Izzy walked around in her pajamas, here shoes were all yucky so she couldn't even wear shoes.
We got there pretty late, but we still had a little time to go and check out the wall. This is the part of the wall that Kelly and I are going to run the half marathon on in May. It is very steep!!! We took the kids up one small part of it. They wanted to buy some swords, so I let them. They were battling each other on the wall. I thought it was an appropriate thing to do on the Wall. Chinese people always want to take picture of foreigner's kids, especially girls. They always want to take pictures of Izzy. So a couple of people got close to her to take a picture of her and she whacked them with her sword. I guess it serves them right??!!!?? Needless to say, Izzy couldn't hike with her sword anymore.
