Dog owners for a day
Okay, I am going to get serious about this blog. I have got to catch up!!!
So about 3 weeks after we arrived in China we began talking about a dog. We had been thinking about getting a dog for the kids for a while. Not really wanting to, but we just thought since we travel around so much, Sawyer really could use a nice companion that he could just pet and take care of. Izzy also just LOVES dogs. Lincoln, not so much, but he was up for the idea. So Kelly and I talked and talked about it. I had him convinced we could do it with an Ayi (our housecleaner and helper with the kids). And since we are going to be in China for 5 years, this is the time to do it. Kelly wasn't 100% yet, but my friend who had just moved here just bought this black lab puppy for a litter we had looked at the weekend before. I talked to her about it and I was worried the litter would be sold soon. You don't see Labs very often. So I took the kids to the pet/vet shop around the corner. They had 2 left. The kids played with them and really wanted this beautiful white puppy. So, as a mom, really, what could I do???? My kids needed a dog! So I bought one!!! He came with a cage and a bowl and a toy and a bag of dog food. They delivered him to our house and since I didn't have enough cash he was totally ok with me paying him later. So I went home with the kids and we waited for this puppy. As soon as I got home I thought, what in the world have I done????? Kelly is going to KILL ME!!! He hadn't been completely convinced we should get a dog. And I hadn't been able to get a hold of him.
So around 4pm our puppy came home! We decided to call her "Ginger". The kids had so much fun with her, but she kept peeing everywhere and pooping and getting into everything. I knew I was in trouble. How in the world am I going to be able to take care of 4 kids and a puppy????
Kelly came home and we showed him our little surprise!!! He was so surprised that he decided to go on a little "motorcycle" scooter ride and think about how much he wants to kill me. What he didn't know was that I really just wanted him to take that dog back!!!! He finally came back and had bought a toy for the puppy. He came to grips with it and was ready to accept my mistake as long as he did not have to do ANYTHING for that dog. So I was up all night with a sick Isabel and apparently that puppy was sick too. She kept pooping and peeing in her crate and and Isabel was throwing up. So I was up all night.
The next morning i called some friends, one said she hated her dog for 2 years, now she is finally glad they got a dog. 2 Years!!! I can not do this for 2 years!!! So I called the vet and asked if I could return the dog. they came by around 10 am and I was free!!! The kids said goodbye, Sawyer was really sad but I said we could babysit our friends dog and maybe get one that doesn't pee and poop all over the house.
After that dog left I was just so happy and relieved and kept thinking over and over and over how easy 4 kids are. 4 kids and a puppy is a nightmare!!! Maybe when Sawyer is 8. Izzy now says to me everyday "I really really want a dog, that is what I want"....
This is our neighbors dog Colla that we borrowed for a day. She is a really really great dog. very well trained and Sawyer loved her. But we decided if and when we do get a dog, we can not have a baby crawling on the ground. So maybe later...

And reconfirmed to me why a dog is not a good choice for us. Every once in a while I convince myself it would be great (because the kids want one so bad). And then I realize I have five children, including a baby. Adding a dog would just be insane!
